This short essay is one of the best that Kurt Vonnegut Jr wrote because of the interesting things he put into this essay. It has horrifying situations that become humorous by an interesting narrator. As I read this short story, I figured out how this little boy lived his life being handicapped. In the first paragraph of his story, Vonnegut indicates that the year is He says that everyone is equal because of the th, th, and th Amendments to the Constitution, and of the Handicapper General. This is telling us that a society has reached equality in a time not very far from ours and that we made a bunch of laws to do it.

Vonnegut criticizes the idea of absolute equality in Harrison Bergeron and argues permitting political leaders to make laws that prohibit the citizens individuality and competitive nature. The short story Harrison Bergeron introduces the son of the two main characters, George and Hazel Bergeron, and has been taken at the young age of fourteen. Later in the story, Harrison returns, interrupting a broadcast of which is found out that he has remarkable strengths and intelligence, as an escapee from jail wanting to overthrow the government and help the citizens of the society. Vonnegut mocks the government for letting the amendments, that would create absolute equality, be enacted. And George, while his intelligence was way above normal, had a little mental handicap radio in his ear. He was required by law to wear it at all times.

The theme of this story that the most unique people in life are the most important, yet they are looked as bad to others and society refuses to accept them.
