As with earlier examples of Greek pottery, the motifs are neither applied with paints pigments nor glazes. Greek kiln technology never allowed for the full vitrification of silicates necessary to melt glazes because they could not achieve necessary temperatures. Instead, Greek pottery is decorated with slips, suspensions of fine clay particles with varying concentrations of Ferric Oxide, responsible for the black and red colors typical of Greek Vases. In the Black-Figure Technique, a ceramic vessel is coated in dilute slip, which is allowed to dry. Then, the figures are added on with a stronger concentration.
