Microsoft Excel is preprogrammed to make it easier to enter dates. This is very frustrating when you enter something that you don't want changed to a date. Unfortunately there is no way to turn this off. But there are ways to get around it. Preformat the cells you want to enter numbers into as Text.
Let's say that you want to easily enter the current date and time while making a time log of activities. Or perhaps you want to display the current date and time automatically in a cell every time formulas are recalculated. There are several ways to insert the current date and time in a cell. On a worksheet, select the cell into which you want to insert the current date or time. To change the date or time format, right-click on a cell, and select Format Cells.
This video shows how to fix the dates that won't change format, and there are written steps below. In the screen shot below, Column C contains imported dates, which show the date and time, separated by a space character. The Short Date format has been applied, from the Excel Ribbon, but the date format does not change.
